Hello and welcome again to another edition of Great Video Game Ideas Not Used. It's time for Crossover Edition #4. The previous articles can be found under their proper number (Cross 1, Cross 2, Cross 3). If you wish, you can go back and look those up, but it's not a must. Also, GVGINU has a new website, so the one from before you don't have to worry about. You can find the site which has all of the links to the articles in this series as well as a forums section when you click the captial letters. So if you enjoy the series, please check out the website. I'm quite happy with the ideas that I've come up for this article below, though a couple could have fallen in with my "Throwback" articles, they fit better here. It didn't take me very long to find combinations that I liked, which is different from my first three attempts as they took me some time. I hope that you do find my thoughts and crossover ideas to be enjoyable and worthy of play. #1: "Capcom vs SNK 3" Now I know that people have been clamering for this game for quite some time, I have myself as well. But what I don't think that a lot of people get is the fact that the licenses that SNK Playmore allotted to Capcom are now dead. It would be nice if they renewed them for a couple of games, but I'm not sure if it is something that they would like to do at the moment. I know that lots of fighting game fans have been waiting for it though. So here are my suggestions for it. Art Style The art style of "Capcom vs SNK 3" should actually match that of "Street Fighter 4". This being that it would be a Capcom produced game. It would be a unique feel to see SNK characters with that design, and I'm sure many of them will look great. Gameplay For me, I think this game should play just like "Street Fighter 4" does, but with allowance of all Super Moves/Arts, and for Ultra Moves to be given to all of the SNK characters. I didn't like how "Street Fighter x Tekken" felt, and it probably wouldn't be a good feel for the SNK fighters. Also, the use of three to four man teams should be continued, but the "ratio system" should be dropped. And team based matches should be played in "King of Fighters" ('94 - '98 or 2003) style. And of course, single character matches, as it wouldn't quite work for everyone to be stuck playing as character teams. Characters "Capcom vs SNK 2" had 48 characters available for play (24 Capcom , 24 SNK ) and the roster was pretty nice. I'd always wished they'd put more characters in the game, but I understand they couldn't please everyone and throw all of their characters in. But, they could continue with that list of characters and just expand upon it (not like what they did with "Marvel vs Capcom 3"). Below, I will list the character roster for "CvS 2" and underneath that, I will list the additional characters for both side that I think should be included in the next possible game. Capcom Side From "CvS 2" Akuma Balrog Blanka Cammy Chun-Li Dan Hibiki Dhalsim Eagle E. Honda Guile Ken Masters Kyosuke M.Bison Maki Morrigan Aensland Rolento Schugerg Ryu Evil Ryu Sagat Sakura Kasugano Vega Yun Zangief Shin Akuma SNK Side From "CvS 2" Athena Asamiya Benimaru Nikaido Chang Koehan Geese Howard Haohmaru Iori Yagami Orochi Iori Joe Higashi Kim Kaphwan King Kyo Kusanagi (Pre-NESTS) Hibiki Takane Mai Shuranui Nakoruru Raiden Rock Howard Rugal Bernstein Ryo Sakazaki Ryuhaku Todoh Ryuji Yamazaki Terry Bogard Vice Yuri Sakazaki Ultimate/God Rugal Now, for the characters that I believe should be added to the roster. How could I expect them to fit so many characters into a fighting game? I mean, that's 136 characters on top of the 48 already there for 184 characters in the game. That sounds to me like an awesome roster for a game that wouldn't have a true story to it. And with the coming PS4 and Durango , it shouldn't be a problem honestly. It probably might even be possible on the Wii U (you have to remember that the processor on it is much more powerful than the 360 and PS3 despite the fact that the graphics are similar). This is also if they were to keep the same design set up as "Street Fighter IV" as I have suggested. It would give players a lot of variety and nearly every battle fought could be completely different based on the characters used. Now, for characters like Kyo, I'd suggest using his updated look (actually, I would suggest it for pretty much everyone), and giving him all of his moves. I'll write down the example below using the six button set up of "SF IV". This is special moves only, as the other attacks he has usually are given to him. Kyo Kusanagi Special Moves: Key: F = Foward, B = Back, D = Down, U = Up, P = Punch, K = Kick, L = Light, M = Medium, H = Heavy Orobo Guruma: F, D, DF + K Kai: D, DF, F + K, K R.E.D. Kick: B, D, DB + K Kototsuki Yo: F, DF, D, DB, B + K Oniyaki: F, D, DF + P Yamibarai: D, DF, F + HP Aragami: D, DF, F + LP Konokizu: Aragami + D, DF, F + P Yanosahi(1): Konokizu + P Nanase(1): Konokizu + K Yanosahi(2): Aragami + F, DF, D, DB, B + P Migari Ugachi: Yanosahi(2) + P Nanase(2): Yanosahi(2) + K Dokugami: D, DF, F + MP Tumiyomi: Dokugami + F, DF, D, DB, B + P Batuyomi: Tumiyomi + F + P Oniyaki: Batuyomi + F, D, DF + P Ryuu Iri: D, DB, B + P (counter, done against high attacks) Tora Fuse: D, DB, B + P (counter, done against low attacks) Though I haven't written out the complete names of each attack, this is a perfect Kyo Special Move mapping. This way there don't need to be alternative versions for him and he can have all of the attacks that players have wanted him to have available. Kyo isn't the only character that this can be done for, but I'm not going to write out what it should be for every character. This article would be a novel by then if I did. So, onto the next game crossover. #2 "SNK vs. Capcom 2: Beyond Chaos" The thoughts that are probably running through some people's minds right now are probably negative toward this. Honestly, yes, "SvC:Chaos" was not a great game, but it wasn't as horrible as it has been made out to be. There were plenty of great characters in the game (a few odd ones too), and it played pretty smoothly. Sure, there were some balance issues, and the game lacked any form of dodging, but it was only SNK 's first attempt at crossing the characters together. The first game is always like a blueprint, one that helps you fix the faults of your creation when you make the following game. The way I'm seeing a this game made in my mind though, I'm sure people would like "SvC2" very much. Art Style Well, for this game, I would figure that it should look similar in appearance to the "King of Fighters XII". I actually quite thoroughly enjoy the artwork in that game and how fluid the animations for the characters are. It might not be the 2.5D styling of "SF IV", but it does the job quite well. I would be happy to see some Capcom fighters done up in that style. Gameplay Well, this is very easy for me to answer. The gameplay for "SvC2" should be identical to that of "KoF XIII". The engine used for that game worked quite well and I didn't find many problems with it. The only tweak I would make to this engine would be to allow for team battles to be fought like they were in "KoF 2003" when Ash Crimson first appeared. Single characetr battles should also still be available, but definitely a swap in and out battle type would be preferred for team matches. I wouldn't want this to fall to the wayside like "SF x Tekken" matches do, you beat one character and the round is over. That is an annoying fighting game mechanic. Characters Okay, so "SvC:Chaos" came in with 18 playable characters for each franchise totaling at 36 characters in the game. That's not a bad start. "Capcom vs SNK" had 33 characters initially, 35 after the "Pro" version came out. I'm getting side tracked though. Before I list the characters that I think should be in the next game, I'm going to list those who were in the first. SNK Side Characters Regulars: Kyo Kusanagi Iori Yagami Terry Bogard Mai Shiranui Kim Kaphwan Choi Bounge Ryo Sakazaki Kasumi Todoh Mr. Karate Earthquake Genjuro Kibagami Shiki Sub-Bosses: Geese Howard Goenitz Mars People Orochi Iori Bosses: Serious Mr. Karate Athena Capcom Side Characters Regulars: Ryu Ken Guile Chun-Li Dhalsim Balrog Vega Sagat M.Bison Akuma Hugo Tessa Sub-Bosses: Dan Demitri Zero Violent Ken Bosses: Shin Akuma Firebrand/Red Arremer From that list of characters above, I would like to drop a couple of entries. Only two of them. Zero and Mars People. My only reasoning for this is that they don't quite fit the style that well, and would be a bit odd. Also, Serious Mr. Karate and Shin Akuma would become sub-boss characters, fought before the final bosses. Athena would have two forms, keeping her Goddess form as a game boss, and her "KoF" style form as a regular character, so that brings us to 35 playable characters. Now, I will name off the characters that would be added new to this game in their proper category. New SNK Side Characters Regulars: Athena (Normal Form) Sie Kensou Bao from "KoF '99" Benimaru Joe Higashi Andy Bogard Ash Crimson Leona Heidern Heidern Saisyu Kusanagi Shingo Yabuki Mature Vice Ramon Kaede (Normal Form) from "The Last Blade" Hyo Amano from "The Last Blade" Setsuna from "The Last Blade 2" Yuki from "The Last Blade" Hoahmaru from "Samurai Shodown" Galford D. Weller from "Samurai Shodown" Kazuki Kazama from "Samurai Shodown IV" Cham Cham from "Samurai Shodown II" K' Maxima Marco Rossi from "Metal Slug" Tarma Roving from "Metal Slug" Sub-Bosses: The Kusanagi from "KoF 2002" Shion from "KoF XI" Magaki from "KoF XI" Shizuka Kusanagi created for this game and Kyo's Mother Bosses: Dark Wolf created for this game, Orochi possessed form of Terry Bogard, inspired by "Fatal Fury 2" movie Goodman from "Neo Geo Battle Colesium" as special boss, alternate to Goddess Athena. Alright, not the Capcom side is going to look a little odd because Dan Hibiki will be moved from the Sub-Boss category to a regular character. So I will be naming 5 characters to be Sub-Bosses for Capcom side instead of four. New Capcom Side Characters Regulars: Alex Sean Matsuda Yung Yang Ibuki Dudley Remi Makoto Rolento Haggar Guy Maki Cody Fei-Long Cammy Hakan Crimson Viper Abel Rufus Juri Jon Talbain Morrigan Aensland Sodom from "Final Fight" Blanka from "Street Fighter II" Necro Karen Sub-Bosses: Urien Rosanov created for this game, based on "Street Fighter Alpha the Animation" character Oro Ingrid from "Capcom Fighting Jam" Gouken from "SF IV" Bosses: Evil Ryu Sadler created for this game, based on "Street Fighter Alpha the Animation" character as special boss, alternative to Firebrand Yep, I named movie characters. They seem like interestnig enough characters to be used. I don't see why Capcom didn't make them original characters as it is. I guess though it's just my own personal interests, but I think there are plenty of people who could agree. And I know that this list is shorter than the one I made for "CvS 3", but I think that with 100 characters playable and the keeping the pre-fight dialogue like both "SvC: Chaos" and "KoF XIII" have, this is enough for this game. And I know that this is already long as it is, but yes, there is more. #3: "Tekken vs/x King of Fighters" Yep, another fighting game crossover. But this time, specific franchises. And it's "Tekken vs/x King of Fighters" because Namco should be the ones to develop this game. "KoF x Tekken" wouldn't be bad, but I've already covered a game that should use the appropriate gameplay set up. Though it is obvious that Namco would have to incorporate a few things from SNK Playmore 's series in order for this game to be fully playable and fair. Otherwise anyone playing with Terry would spam Power Geysers the whole match. Since this is a first and might possibly end up as a one time deal, this idea would be well suited to have 60 playable characters in it. 62 characters including bosses. Yes, this game would have non-playable bosses. Now, onto the breakdown. Art Style Wel, obviously I would say that this game should be look very much like "Tekken Tag Tournament 2". That's just how it should be visually though. "Tekken" games usually look pretty amazing and I think they could really make the SNK characters look stunning. So Namco , you might want to get in contact with SNK Playmore . Gameplay Well, I'll try to make this sound as simple as I possibly can, though I don't know if the result will be what I want it to. As far as have the character handle, they should control like "Tekken". It's not the same 4-button set up that SNK Playmore normally uses for "KoF" and similar games, but it pretty effective for 3D fighting games. Next, the gauges from "KoF XIII" must be implemented. This way no one can do what I'd mentioned above with SNK character super specials. It will also limit "Tekken" characters strongest attacks to, but it'll be worth it in the end. So basically I guess what I mean is "Tekken" controls, "KoF" interface. That might be right. This should be coupled with 1-on-1 battles, nothing pair/team based in this game. Characters Well, since I am limiting myself to 62 characters, I don't think that this will take long. And when I pick these characters, I'm thinking of the possible awesome fights that could come of them running into each other. Whether people know it or not, "Tekken" and "KoF" could pretty much go hand and hand. Both rosters boast extremely versatile and powerful characters, and both have extensive movelists. The King of Iron Fists and the King of Fighters, sounds like a match made in heaven to me. And so I begin. Tekken Characters Jin Kazama from "Tekken 3" Kazuya Mishima from "Tekken" Heiachi Mishima from "Tekken" Asuka Kazama from "Tekken 5" Ling Xiaoyu from "Tekken 3" Hwoarang from "Tekken 3" Baek Doo San from "Tekken 2" King from "Tekken" Jack from "Tekken" Paul Phoenix from "Tekken" Marshall Law from "Tekken"/Forest Law from "Tekken 3" Yoshimitsu from "Tekken" Raven from "Tekken 5" Steve Fox from "Tekken 4" Christie Monteiro from "Tekken 4" Bob/Slim Bob from "Tekken 6" Alisa Bosconovitch from "Tekken 6" Feng Wei from "Tekken 5" Lei Wulong from "Tekken 2" Lee Chaolan from "Tekken" Nina Williams from "Tekken" Anna Williams from "Tekken" Julia Chang from "Tekken 3" Bryan Fury from "Tekken 3" Bruce Irvin from "Tekken 2" Michelle Chang from "Tekken" Ganryu from "Tekken" Craig Murduk from "Tekken 4" Violet from "Tekken 4" Azazel from "Tekken 6" Jinpachi Mishima from "Tekken 5" as Namco boss. That looks like a pretty nice line up. Now onto the "KoF" side. King of Fighters Characters Kyo Kusangi (most recent outfit) Terry Bogard ("Mark of the Wolves" outfit, but with his Rising Tackle) Ryo Sakazaki Benimaru Nikaido Andy Bogard Robert Garcia Goro Daimon Joe Higashi Takuma Sakazaki King Mai Shuranui Yuri Sakazaki Blue Mary Yashiro Nanakase Chris Shermie Sie Kensou Leona Heidern Elisabeth Blanctorche Iori Yagami (with his most recent outfit, but having his flames) K' Kula Diamond Whip Ramon Seth Venessa Heavy D Lucky Glauber Brian Battler Ryuji Yamazaki Zero from "KoF 2000" as SNK side boss That seems pretty good as well. I hope that this list looks pretty good to those who are actually interested in the thought. I do want to put more names in both lists, but it's unreasonable for a possible first game to have a roster higher than what I came up with. I would love to see what Namco could do with the "King of Fighters" characters though. Both sides have many characters with a lot of moves and attacks to boot, so it is a very interesting pairing. Luckily, this crossover didin't take up a much room. So with that, I will end this article. Yes, this is really the end, I know I gave you a few long lists to read through, but it was worth it I think. I only did three crossovers this time around as opposed to six, but with the length of each I think it's okay. Again, please check out the GVGINU website, link above. And also, share this article on any site you think people will find it interesting. Keeps your eyes peeled for my next article, as #30 will be another original video game idea from me. Yes, you can be excited. I'll be writing it soon, so look out for it. Until then, enjoy your games. |
