Ergonomic trends have been improving workplace efficiency for some time, changing the comfort and way people do business inside the office. However, what about the work done outdoors? Outdoor work is the real back-breaking labor that you dread doing, and Bosse Tools is now making this easier. Stephen Walden is the founder of Bosse Tools, a startup that is reinventing hardware tools and making them more ergonomic and easier to use. With their "Handle-It Technology," it is now easier than ever to use a shovel and other gardening tools! Their ergonomically efficient designs help to maximize productivity and diminish strain with quality tools, changing the way you view manual labor. This interview with Stephen Walden reveals the insight and inspiration behind his invention! How can you support Bosse Tools? Click here to view their Kickstarter campaign! General Information Founder Name: Stephen Walden Business Name: Bosse Tools Business Description: Bosse Tools is a startup company that is revolutionizing hardware tools through ergonomics; we have reinvented construction, gardening, and farming tools. We developed an ergonomically efficient design that utilizes a rotational center handle. Our tools (shovels, rakes, brooms, pitchforks, etc.) maximize muscle usage and diminish strain - increasing stamina and reducing injury. Best of all, we are proudly Made in America. Number of Employees: 3 Year Founded: 2012 Website: www.bossetools.com Twitter Handle: @BosseTools Kickstarter Campaign: https://bitly.com/1d54tH8 Interview Katie Sowa: Congratulations on the launching your new Kickstarter Campaign for Bosse Tools! Can you share what Bosse Tools is? Stephen Walden: Thanks Katie. Sure, Bosse Tools, simply put, has combined traditional hardware tools with ergonomics. The idea behind Bosse Tools stems from the significant amount of workplace injury in the field of manual labor. Whether that's a construction worker shoveling dirt, a farmer digging trenches, or a gardener working at home - fact of the matter is that hundreds of thousands of people are injured every year. This glaring problem needed a solution, and that solution is Bosse Tools. In short, we have reinvented the shovel and a few other similar tools. Katie: How did you come up with the idea for Bosse Tools? Stephen: I wish I had a more exciting story to tell you, but honestly, I was working for my parents. I was using a shovel to dig a trench and later that day I was using a hedge trimmer to cut some foliage. Sitting on my back patio, sore and tired, I imagined putting the perpendicular trimmer handles onto a shovel. I thought, "why not?" So I built a prototype out of PVC pipe, and once I dug with the first one, I knew I was onto something big. Katie: As a product innovator, what is the biggest thing you've learned so far with developing a new invention? Stephen: The biggest thing it to learn from everyone, literally everyone. No matter who you are talking to, so many people hold a wealth of knowledge that you have to tap into. Product innovators can get frustrated because there is no road-map or guideline on how to develop their ideas - and that is because you are building something which is a "first of its kind." But when you realize other people's input and opinions are really guiding you to that perfect prototype, then all of a sudden everyone you meet becomes free information that shapes your success. Katie: What is your inspiration for being an entrepreneur? Stephen: To make something great. It sounds simple, but honestly, that's the coolest thing about entrepreneurship. Take things to the next level, stir up the status quo, and disrupt the marketplace. Making people "double-take" is inspiring because you have the power to bring change. There are plenty of problems in the world that can be solved. Shovels cause injury, shovels are just average, so why not make shovels great and save a lot of pain for a lot of people. Greatness is inspirational. Katie: As a student entrepreneur, how did your education and student experience impact your journey? Stephen: Education has given me an incredible framework. My job now is to fill in that framework and make it succeed. Academia provides a very diverse but structured environment that teaches you a lot. Many doors have opened for me because of the fact I started Bosse Tools as a college student. It has allowed me to pull my ideas through the "academic ringer" and bounce them off other teachers and students. Hearing about the classic mistakes and downfalls in class will help me, I hope, avoid them in life. Katie: What was it like to be a part of a student accelerator at Loyola Marymount University? Any advice for other students looking to get involved with an accelerator? Stephen: The student accelerator was a great experience because it added a competitive edge to the classroom. Every student-company wanted to show up for class and present their successes and milestones. There was no winner at the end of the semester, but we all knew who had really struck gold! I encourage students with and without ideas to get involved. It is a great atmosphere to explore your own idea (or better yet, hop on someone else's genius invention!) Katie: What do you consider your biggest entrepreneurial achievement thus far, and what do you contribute as being most valuable to your success? Stephen: Made in America, no question about it. Time and time again, I was told that my ideas were good, but there's no way I can avoid overseas production to stay competitive. It took an entire year of searching for the right manufacturer, designer, and team of people here in the USA, but I can proudly say that my products are Made in the USA. I contribute my deep sense of patriotism combined with America's recent realization that it is the most powerful force in the world. Being an American makes me proud. But being able to prove the skeptics wrong by keeping my products here as well - now that is an achievement I love to share! Also, The Kid President is inspirational, check him out on youtube. Katie: Do you have any words of wisdom for other aspiring young entrepreneurs? Stephen: Three words of wisdom that will ensure success: "Go" and "Don't sleep." First, I tell young entrepreneurs to "go" because so many people have good ideas, but they don't do anything with them, and that's frustrating. Get your ideas out there. Keep going, keep going, keep going. And second, I say "don't sleep" because if you are truly passionate about your ideas, you won't be able to sleep. They will keep you up at night. A true aspiring entrepreneur wants to spend every waking second playing with their ideas, because that is what it takes to succeed - no successful person will ever say, "wow, I wish I slept more during college." We have 24 hours every day, might as well use them all. Stephen is grateful to all of the mentors, counselors and friends who have been inspirational in supporting his entrepreneurial journey and have helped make Bosse Tools what it is today.
